DID YOU KNOW YOU CAN MAKE BUTTER AT HOME?
Did you know you can make butter at home with just 1 ingredient and the process is so easy and the butter made at home tastes so much better. It is made fresh at home, free from chemicals and preservatives and you can enjoy it guilt free. Spread it on a slice of bread or turn it into ghee to enjoy it in a desi way!
Now let me tell you the process of making homemade butter. It is super simple and anyone can make it. You only need some good quality heavy cream or whipping cream to make butter at home. The quality of the heavy cream matters in making a high quality butter. If the heavy cream you are using is from a organic grass fed cow, you will have deep yellow coloured butter. You will get pale yellow or even white coloured butter depending on what the cow is fed from. So make sure to use some high quality butter.
HOW TO MAKE HOMEMADE BUTTER?
Use a stand mixer if you have one, or use electric hand mixer. Pour all the heavy cream in a bowl and start whisking it for about 8 minutes until it reaches its peak stiffness. Once it reaches its peak stiffness cover with a kitchen towel, to spare your kitchen and to prevent the liquid from splashing all over. Now continue whisking for another 6 to 8 minutes until all the butter separates from the butter milk. The solid that’s left is the butter and the liquid is the butter milk.
Collect all the butter and squeeze between your palms, to remove any butter milk from the butter. You will be left with a thick ball of butter. Wash the butter with some ice cold water to remove any excess butter milk from it. Congratulations! Now you have made your own butter at home.
HOW TO WRAP AND STORE HOMEMADE BUTTER?
Shape the butter however you like, you can shape it into two long sticks or keep it as a ball. Then wrap it in a parchment paper and store it in the fridge to enjoy! The shelf life of the butter depends on the expiry of the heavy cream. So make sure to check the expiry date on the package of the heavy cream you use.
CAN I MAKE GHEE/CLARIFIED BUTTER WITH IT?
Yes you can! The process of making ghee from the homemade butter does not change. You can turn the butter in ghee, store it and enjoy as usual.

HOMEMADE BUTTER
Equipment
- Stand Mixer or Electric hand mixer
Ingredients
- 600 ml Heavy cream or Whipping cream
Instructions
- Start with fresh, cold heavy cream. You can use any amount, but I used 600 ml of heavy cream, it yields 200 to 250 grams of butter.
- Pour the cream into the bowl of your stand mixer. If using a electric hand mixer, pour the cream into a large mixing bowl.
- Whisk the cream on a medium speed until the cream reaches its peak stiffness and turns into whipped cream. This step will take about 5 to 8 minutes.
- Cover the bowl with a kitchen towel, just to prevent the liquid from splashing all over your kitchen.
- Continue whisking again until the cream starts to look grainy and finally separates into solid and liquid. The solid you see is the butter and the liquid is the butter milk. This process will take another 7 to 8 minutes.
- Remove the butter and squeeze between your palms to remove any excess liquid.
- Rinse the butter with some ice cold water to remove any excess butter milk.
- Save the butter milk in a jar, you can use it to bake cakes and make pancakes.
- Shape the butter into any desired shape, wrap it in a parchment paper and store it in the fridge to enjoy.
Notes
- The shelf life of the butter will be same as the shelf life of the heavy cream you use. So make sure to check the expiry date.
- Use high quality cream for great flavour.
